my criteria for a favourite film on this list is, it's something I've seen more than once and across a long period of time, it has to be something I still stand by as the person I am now, something I'm don't feel embarassed to be understood as part of my sense of self, it's something I've recommended to friends routinely, something I can talk you into a hole about, and when I watch it there's this feeling of sitting on the edge of my seat like a child at a magic show from start to finish.
Intentionally absent are a large majority of films I've gone mad for about men shooting one another, in that I'm not sure what percentage of the storytelling we consume should be about structures of violence, & I think the blokishness of film culture in the past distorts how significant that genre is or should be.
