my favourite knots

everything i know and regularly use. might be updated in future as i learn new things

Basic Knots

all-rounder
the half hitch - deceptively simple, incredibly powerful.

Rope Care

how to coil rope
one technique
stop a rope from fraying
back splice
join two knots together
fisherman's bend

Loops

loop at the end of the rope
bowline
loop midway down a rope
alpine butterfly

camping knots

tensioning a tarp onto a ridgeline
prusik knot
tensioning a rope when it needs to stay in place
truckers hitch with an alpine butterfly
ropes sliding down other ropes
farrimond friction hitch, my favourite all time knot. or if I'm teaching someone and it's not essential, a midshipman's hitch or rolling hitch. I wouldn't use the latter on nylon tent guy lines, they will slip out.
tie a blanket under a hammock
sheet bend

Hitches

at the end, tie a rope to a pole then add tension
timber hitch
midway down, tie a rope to a pole
Clove hitch - for example, to hold a tarp door open over a tent

other

favourite trick knot for showing off
highwayman's hitch
build a structure
square lashing and diagonal lashing
make a pole saw/make a long pole
round lashing

Naughty Knots

favourite trick knot
what i know as a texas handcuff. It's a sort of, ratcheting double larks head.
single column
Somerville Bowline, followed by a Captured Overhand Cuff. In practice, I routinely forget how to do a somerville bowline and do a boola boola instead, which i think is an inferior knot in every way aside from ease of learning and remembering.
double column
Lark's head bar tie. i like that this one gives your person some freedom to adjust position and it also works on people with flexibility limitations, which is pretty much everyone. you are a LOT more likely to use this one than one with the wrists up close.
bedpost hitch
farrimond friction hitch, my favourite all time knot. or if I'm teaching someone, a midshipman's hitch or rolling hitch
